Hayden came into this world a beautiful happy, healthy little boy. Early on he suffered from reflux, originally we thought no big deal, but it progessively became more of an issue. To the point that Dr.'s suggested something pretty aggresive. We followed the medical advice, we agreed to have a surgical procedure done to help correct the reflux. Spent 5 years with a feeding tube and much to our dismay more problems than solutions.
NOW, 9 years later we suffer daily with the "surgical side effects" of that choice. The fine print that they gloss over...the result...Dumping syndrome and Post Prandial Hypoglycemia (or reactive hypoglycemia..your choice on the wording) , a teeny tiny little stomach that doesn't like food and also the inability to actually vomit. Throw in a good heaping dose of Asthma for good measure and there you have it.
We have been up and down over the years, been in the hospital so many times you can't believe it and yet...I have the greatest kid you could ever ask for! We are currently on a good stretch. He is healthy and growing!
Everything is controlled by diet, he follows a restricted carb/sugar diet as if he was diabetic but doesn't use insulin or any other drugs. Food doesn't stay in his belly long enough for the insulin to meet up with it during digestion...if he takes in too many carbs it gets ugly really fast! That means there isn't as much wiggle room for him, he really needs to eat the best he can - all the time...but he is a 10 yr old boy so I am always trying to come up with new ways to make food enjoyable for him.
I use this blog as a way to keep in touch with our friends when he is sick and we are away from home (we currently go to a hospital 2.5 hours away from our house) a place to record this journey...oh, and share some recipes!
